Perpetual Trophies: Count the Years Before You Buy the Base

A perpetual trophy is bought once and lives at the league for decades. It is the one award where the base is the product.

Do the arithmetic first

Add the seasons already played to the seasons you expect the competition to run, then add a margin. That number is how many side plates the base has to carry.

Almost every league undercounts, because the trophy is being bought in the excitement of starting something and nobody is thinking about year twenty-two.

When it fills up anyway

It is recoverable. A larger base can be fitted under the existing trophy, or the historic plates can be consolidated onto a companion plaque that stands beside it.

Both look deliberate if they are done properly and both look like a patch if they are not. Planning for the years at the start costs nothing and avoids the question.

Always order a keeper

A perpetual trophy that goes home with the winning team has a habit of not coming back, or coming back with a dented base and a missing plate.

A small matching award that the winner actually keeps solves it completely, costs very little, and gives the team something to photograph. Every league we have supplied learns this exactly once.

Match the plates forever

Side plates need to match the ones cut six years ago, in typeface, finish and size. That means your supplier has to still hold the file.

We do, and we will cut a matching plate for a trophy we did not originally supply if you send us a photograph and one of the existing plates.
