It is the most recognisable failure in the category and it is decided at assembly, before anything is engraved.
How a column trophy is actually held together
From the bottom up: a weighted base, a threaded rod rising out of it, column sections sliding over the rod, a riser, and the figure screwed onto the top of the rod. Tighten it and the whole stack is in compression. It is a good design.
It only works if the rod is long enough. A rod that stops short and engages just the top section leaves the joint carrying the load on very few threads, usually helped by a bead of glue.
What then happens
A trophy gets picked up by the figure. Every single time. That is a twisting load on exactly the joint that is weakest, and a few threads plus glue will not survive a season of it.
Once the figure turns freely, the trophy reads as broken even though nothing has actually failed structurally. Nobody ever glues it back straight.
The base is the other half
A hollow moulded base keeps the shipping weight down and the price low, and it makes the trophy top-heavy. These live on shelves in children’s bedrooms and get knocked constantly.
Mass in the base fixes it and is the single upgrade most worth paying for. It also makes the trophy feel more expensive in the hand than it is, which nobody minds.
What to specify
A threaded rod running the full height, torqued onto a weighted base. Ask for base dimensions in writing.
That is the entire specification and it is almost never quoted. Two suppliers can offer an identical-looking trophy at an identical price and only one of them will still be standing up next season.
