Column Trophies

A column trophy is not one object. It is a base, a threaded rod, one or more column sections, a riser and a figure, all clamped together by that rod. Everything that goes wrong with them is a rod problem or a base problem.

The failure everybody has seen is the figure that spins. It happens when the rod is short and only engages the top section, so the load on the joint is a couple of threads and a bead of glue. We run the rod the full height and torque it down onto a weighted base, which costs a few cents and changes the product entirely.

The base is the other half. A hollow moulded base is light enough to tip when a door slams, and a trophy that lives on a shelf in a nine-year-old’s bedroom gets knocked constantly. We weight ours, and we will tell you the base dimensions rather than only the overall height, because two trophies of the same height can be completely different objects.

Why does the figure on our old trophies spin?

Because the threaded rod only engaged the top section and the joint was relying on glue. A rod that runs the full height of the trophy and is torqued onto the base has nothing to work loose. Ask any supplier how far the rod goes; most will not know.

Are taller trophies better?

Not on their own. Height is the cheapest thing to add and the base is where the money should go — a tall trophy on a light hollow base is top-heavy and tips. Ask for base dimensions and weight alongside the height.
